RIBA Stage 3: Spatial Coordination
Stage 3 spatially coordinates the design before detailed information is produced. The architectural concept is tested and proven.
Use this overview to plan your research. Verify current requirements and site-specific conditions against the relevant primary sources. Read our data sources, coverage and limits guide.
Purpose
Undertake Design Studies, Engineering Analysis and Cost Exercises to test the Architectural Concept and produce a spatially coordinated design.
Core tasks
- Spatially coordinated design
- Engineering Analysis (structural grid, MEP zones, fire)
- Updated Cost Plan
- Planning Application typically submitted at end of Stage 3
Deliverables
- Spatially Coordinated Design
- Updated Outline Specification
- Updated Cost Plan
- Planning Application
Planning evidence pack
Generate the daylight, sunlight, overshadowing, transport, and walkability evidence many LPAs request, in one click.
Massing arbitration
Test multiple massing options against rights of light, daylight, and overshadowing rules before locking the design.
Questions
When is planning submitted?
Most projects submit at the end of Stage 3, once the design is spatially coordinated.
Can Atlasly help with daylight and sunlight?
Yes, automated VSC, NSL, APSH and overshadowing analysis are core Atlasly outputs.
